What inspired you to create this month's DST Gold Member kit?
We were inspired by the beauty that comes with this time of year. Spring, summer, weddings, proms, Mother’s Day, to name a few. We are known for our heritage and traditional style that gives layouts and albums a realistic feel to them.
What is your favorite part or element of the kit?
That is a difficult question, but we would have to say our flowers which are always one-of-a-kind within a collection and our graffiti overlays that can enhance any photo and layout…while traditional in style, these transfers give either a softer feel to a background, or a bit of grunge with a twist.
Tell us about your family: How long have you been designing? What program(s) do you use?
Barbara and I (Alexis - a.k.a. Lexy) are a design team that collaborate on every collection we produce. We do this via long distance on daily basis - we absolutely love working together! I began designing 7 years ago and after 6 months of working behind-the-scenes, Barbara joined the studio in January 2015. Barbara is married to her husband for 36 years and has 2 daughters, a son and 4 beautiful grandchildren. I am currently engaged to a wonderful man I’ve known for 39 years and have a grown son who is also about to become engaged. Barbara and I will both be planning weddings for our children soon. We use Photoshop CC for all our design work.
What part of designing comes easiest to you (themes, colors, papers, elements?)
Color drives us in most everything we do to make a kit come together. Although we do some themed kits, most of our collections are created to be versatile for all occasions. Flowers are always key and we rarely duplicate any element so as to provide our customers with variation within their own designs.
What inspires you?
We are truly inspired by all things that are beautiful. Beginning with color, glass, crystal, flowers and lace and always nature. At times our own vintage photos will provide insight as to colors and style.
If you’re running low on design mojo, where do you go to kickstart your creativity?
For both of us, color inspires creativity. I love colored glass, and will sometimes look through my art tabletop books to inspire me. We also will visit Pinterest and find photos that give us the spark we need. Sometimes, it’s just stepping away from work, get outside and be inspired by nature’s quietude.
How much time do you allocate to designing in a typical week?
That is hard to pinpoint, but this is a business for us and we each have a set time each day. That is just to create a kit or collection! Additional time is spent making decisions, photographing, extracting…just to name a few.
Link us to a layout that you have seen using your work that just left you awestruck.
There are too many to list, but we absolutely love this one designed by Robyn, called, “Sally.”
What’s your favorite food?
For me it is authentic Spanish cuisine or an awesome steak on the grill. I’m not much of a foodie, but indulge in chocolate too frequently! For Barbara, a good grilled steak or smoked ribs and Mexican cuisine, along with a little Blue Bell ice cream on the side!
What magazines do you subscribe to (scrap & non-scrap related)?
We both have our favorites from Stampington, of course…Take Ten, Stamper’s Sampler and any special edition issues. I love InStyle, Town & Country, any home & garden style magazines.
Favorite tv show?
Barbara likes to watch HGTV. I don’t watch TV aside from catching the news once a day…too much time on the computer! *laughing*
Where is the farthest you have been from home?
I have traveled to Europe, with Spain and Italy being my favorite countries. I currently live in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of New York. Barbara has traveled to Europe and Singapore, she lives in Texas.
