Freecycle is a great group! We've given away a waterbed to someone who could use it and from someone else we got about 4 year's worth of Highlights magazine for children. My son loves them!

For both things from Freecycle and Craigslist.com, I'd suggest either meeting in a public location or taking someone with you, but every exchange we've had has been very pleasant. :)
