Okay, I have folks who want me to do personalized scrapbook pages for them. I don't know much about this as I have only scrapped for myself. I know there is commercial use and scrap 4 hire use but my question is this........is it possible to use kits that are neither if you buy it every time you want to use it for a project or do you just need to ask each designer individually? I will mostly be using my own designs but if I have a special request, I am wondering what the etiquette is for these things. I have never specified any terms for such use in my own TOU and have always dealt with it on individual basis so I am wondering if other designers do the same. It seems to me that if you let scrap 4 hire folks buy it each time, they are advertising your product from their site and you are making a sale each time so it is a win/win situation?

We have a rather impressive list of designers that will allow you to use their products without additional purchases or notification so I'd say to start there. I also know of several designers who will allow S4H use if you are buying the kit for each designer and you usually have to get specific permission...some kits are ok and some aren't so you have to be specific. Those situations you will have to ask each designer individually about specific kits. Some designers have clearly spelled out licenses for purchase and some even have clearly stated 'personal use only, no exceptions' type terms. You just have to read the terms and ask questions if something isn't clearly defined. It's really encouraging to me to see so many designers updating their TOU's to make their wishes clearly defined and address the S4H category. Good luck with your new business!

I should think, and I could be wrong, that if you bought the kit for each project you did that you could use any kit you want, but that can end up being an expensive option because you may find that you have stuff from 5 or 6 kits that will work for the project and to buy 6 full kits for a client when you are going to be using very little from each could eat away at your cost structure quickly. If you have a huge stash of S4H items, you don't have to worry about how many kits you pull from because you'll be able to use it all without an additional purchase. Many designers are allowing s4H use nowadays, so I think you would be better off looking at those first, but if you find a kit that would work perfectly and it's not S4H, you would need to purchase one for yourself to keep on your own HD and one for the client to be able to use for them, and as Kaylaugh said you may still want to talk to the designer before doing this to make sure it's okay with them. I think you would be pleasantly surprised by how many popular designers are on the S4H list though.
HTH!

I'm new here and wondering where I would find this list that you mentioned?

Does personal use include scrapping for others for free, as a present? I always assumed it does, but this discussion makes me wonder.....

NO!
It all comes down to if the designer's TOU explicitly states that it's OK for scrap for others aka S4O. If it's Scrap for Hire (S4H) then it's OK for S4O. But if it's simply JUST personal use, then S4O is a BIG NO!
If you're unsure, contact the designer.
