is faked. Does she really think she has to talk down to us?

If you watch clips of her 2006 Gubernatorial debate, she speaks normally, without the smirks and winks.
Personally, I think she got some bad advice/training during her debate prep.

I don't really see any difference except when she adds infliction in her voice. This is just as bad as saying someone with a southern accent is less educated them someone without one. She talks different then what we are used to in politics. Personally, listening to Barney Frank frustrates me 10x more then her. He makes as much money as he does and can't even afford a set of dentures.

I don't think they were saying that she is less educated because of her "folksy" accent, but are asking the question if it is fake. She didn't use it in her earlier debates. Barney Frank sounds the same today as he did ten years ago. No comparison. He is not talking like that to appeal to a certain group of people.
But, whether it is fake or not, she is using it most definitely to her advantage. She even talks about it!! It's politics, and that is why they use focus groups to know what will work best with certain groups of people.

I wasn't saying that they or I think she is less educated. I understood what they were asking and I was just saying that people have a tendency to judge others by the way they speak. While in some instances I can understand - in this - it's who she is. And because it is politics - people can't get used to it. I really didn't notice anything different in her other debates other then a little more emphasis on things. Barney Frank has talked like that forever ... what I am saying is it is more irritating to me then Palin. I would rather hear a folksy accent then someone talking like they have s**t in their mouth.

I mentioned this in the thread about her pronunciation of NUCLEAR. She turns it off and on all during the debate and in interviews. When she has nothing of any relevance or importance to say, she retreats into her "cute, approachable, down-home" style of speech. She also uses it when denigrating the opposition, so as to appear less responsible for the message.

Making fun of Barney Frank is like making fun of someone that stutters. Someone that cannot change how they talk. It's like making fun of someone that has a giant birthmark covering their face. It's like saying they have s**t all over their face. I take offense to your comment!

Is it his speech impediment that frustrates you? Or is it his New England accent?

Hoepfully your children will never have a speech impediment and if they do will NOT be referred to as speaking as if "they have s**t in their mouth"!!! :eek

Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, is one of the major players responsible for the mess we are in today. He led the charge against oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, saying they were in no danger of collapsing. His (now former) boyfriend was an exec at Fannie Mae from '91-'98. He accepted significant campaign contributions from the 2 companies. He has been dubbed their "patron saint". It wasn't until AFTER they collapsed that he "changed his tune."

Do you really think he is partially responsible? Neither party is clean on the Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae issue. They all had their hand in the pot for payouts.
The corporations have the lion share of fault here and should be held accountable.
Many people have chanegd their tune over the current crisis b/c as they were looking to craft a $700B deal pretty much every "expert" on the subject was saying there was still no way to tell how deep or wide the problems run. It's complex because so many areas are intertwined with one another...it's not as easy to say it's all because of Fannie or Freddie or sub-prime lending or deregulation, etc. It's all of those and much more, including being leveraged to the point of no return.

I assume she really talks like that, and may have canned it a bit to sound more professional or experienced when she was in politics in her own state - because its not like they'll be impressed by it so she'd just be natural but not overdo it.
I do think the people handling her and preparing her for her debates etc. are encouraging her to really go for it and use it to her advantage. Maybe giving her a couple of beers before or something. It could even be a bit of a thing where its how she makes herself comfortable when she's nervous - especially if she's been assured that its in her best interest to 'work it'.
I've noticed for myself that my 'accent' and mannerisms actually become more pronounced when I'm with a bunch of people from elsewhere - rather than less so. I could probably keep it in check easily if I made an effort, but as long as I am comfortable (or having a few drinks...) - it becomes pretty obvious.

I agree. I know my southern twain (sp) changes depending on where I am speaking. I know when I'm with my friends, it tends to really show up but when I have to talk in front of a crowd, I try to speak as well as I can.
I've seen and heard Palin in person and she has a wonderful speaking voice and I loved the way she can connect with the audience. She's just and everyday gal and I guess thats what appeals to me the most. OH my gosh!!! I mean, she got an average education, lived an average life, doesn't make millions, loves her state and decided to do something about the corruption there. In her own party!! And people are worried about the way she talks sometimes and she's proud of being a hockey mom. How petty is that I ask you?

I'm sure Sarah Palin is a good person and very likable. My stance has been that she has not been the best, most qualified woman that could have been picked by the Republican party. I would have loved to have seen Elizabeth Dole or Christine Todd Whitman on the ticket. That's just MHO :)

I have always thought that was kind of funny. Who is actually qualified for the job of the President of the United States? I mean, there isn't a college course you can take to prepare you. Elizabeth Dole is a great selection, but I just love the fact that Palin took on her own party. She shows that she isn't scared of the "Good Ole Boys" of politics, she isn't in the Washington family and she's fresh and new. New ideas, new ways of taking care of business. Actually, I would take her over McCain today.

We'll agree to disagree.:lol My main reason that I just cannot vote for her is that she does not support any kind of stem cell research. I can understand her not supporting embryonic, but she does not support bone marrow nor does she support umbilical stem cell research. My nephew has had a stem cell transplant. If it was not for research he never would have been able to have the transplant. Stem cell research is one of the most ground breaking types of research for cancer, auto-immune diseases, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and loads more. That's my reason why....soapbox is put away for a later time.

I know this is gross...but.......you can also do research on women's menstrual blood. I've been reading about it and it seems pretty interesting. McCain supports stem cell and I wonder if Palin knew about other forms of research if she would change her mind on that. I don't know. My father was a heart transplant recipent 18 years ago and I remember way, back when how so many thought that was so wrong to give other people their organs. Medical research scares so many people. But then. Why do we, as a free country, need congress to tell the private sector what we can and cannot research? There are too many very wealthy people out there that could support these things. Just my thoughts.

Because we need to ensure that all research is ethically done. Imagine without regulations, they could test any product on people without a clue if it would be more hurtful than helpful.

As the mother of an autistic child, I do take offense to your remark. My 11 yr. old lost all capacity for speech for over a year. Once able to speak clearly - seven years of speech therapy have helped but I still see him suffer the frustration at not being able to always pronounce certain things.
My original post was in regards to Gov. Palin's switching on and off of an accent when it suits her needs, she has no speech impediment, unlike someone you childishly chose to make fun of.

Explain to me who I made fun of? Who has a speech impediment? Barney Frank does not have a speech impediment ... he has no teeth in his mouth. Kinda like how my grandma sounds when she takes her dentures out.
An accent because of where you come from is not a speech impediment like someone who cannot pronounce their R's or L's. That was *my* point, someone with an accent like from down south alot of times gets looked at as less educated. *Speaking from experience with my husband.* Agian, she did not sound any different to me other then more emphasis on certain things. She does have a slightly twangy accent.

I don't think that people that speak with an accent sound less educated. It's the ones that use poor grammar that do. Using terms such as "I done" or "she don't got", etc...those are the types of things that just jump out at me that someone is uneduacted. She isn't saying those things (that I'm aware of anyway).

Yes sometimes my grandma does talk like she has s**t in her mouth ... or marbles if that is a nicer way of putting it. :)
For the accents, I don't either. It frustrates me when people make comments that they are. My in-laws (not that I like them or anything LOL) are from down south. My dad used to travel down south for his job alot. He even said that some of his reps would make comments because of the way they talked. The "y'all", "fixin to", "yonder", "reckon." That is all normal language in my house because of where my husband is from. When I lived in Texas ... I picked it up. I still say fixin and y'all and call pop soda.
Oh and my husband says "I done" alot too. I am just used to it. His mom always says something that I cannot for the life of me think of right now, but she uses it in the wrong tense. It drives me nuts, but it is what she grew up hearing so to her it is natural.

It makes sense if you consider that, until pressed, she was unaware that there are other methods for obtaining stem cells. If you take a hard position on something before gathering the facts you can be made to look like a fool if you back-pedal and change your mind. I would imagine that she could be in just that position right now. :shrug

Regarding her accent, yes, in my opinion she can turn it "off or on" whichever the campaign feels is to their advantage. Normally a person's accent or if they mispronounce something does not affect how I feel about them. Although in this instance, I have to say that I'm looking at it from a standpoint that she is representing women almost gaining equality to a man and, in my opinion, it doesn't speak very highly of "our" representation. I've also thought that politicians could make good actors, and I guess that is why we have seen quite a few actors who become politicians.
It was interesting to see that our forum isn't the only one bringing up pronunciations. Here (http://www.thesaudavoice.com/the_sauda_voice/2008/10/conservatives-blast-obama-for-pronouncing-pakistan-correctly.html) Obama's pronunciation of Pakistan. NOTE: Yes, this is a liberal blog; it will not show the republican party in a positive light; I'm not linking it to cut the "other guy"; I'm just linking it because I find it interesting that others are talking/blogging about pronunciations in this campaign and, yes, I did reply to the original thread comment.

You've made a great point. I know alot of southern very well educated people that have that accent and speak very well. Even though I consider myself decently educated, my redneck upbringing will come out of me now and again. But, thats usually in jest.
But you are right. I have wondered about people I hear in public service that do really mess up their grammer and I will notice that over an accent any day. Especially by a teacher.
