I know we're all caught up on the Presidential race, but the President can only do so much. Is anyone concerned that the Republicans can lose so many seats that congress can be filibuster proof? http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/story?id=6024813&page=1 The President can set up legislation, but it won't necessarily get approved.

What are your thoughts?

I'm a Democrat...kind of centerist, but this kind of scares me. Not as many checks and balances. Then again, it's up to the people to vote for who they want so it is obvious that America is not happy with what they have.

The only thing I can control with that is that we have a really awesome guy running for Congress here. The guy Harris (http://andyharris.com/) is a OB anesthesiologist for Johns Hopkins and former military so he has great military and medical background to come in for those issues. He is far better suited to me than anyone running for president as far as getting excited about them.

I've thought about this as well. I like the checks and balances. I would like to see more independents in Congress that are more towards the center. I am voting for a Democrat for my area though because the Republican candidate who has been in office for awhile just has not gotten done the things that I had hoped.

Well it all just builds Pelosi's power. It's not the democrats in congress that are the problem. It's thier leaders. Going and saying the war is lost and Pelosi who refuses to even talk about stuff that she doesn't support personally is not a good way to lead. There are many democrats who can lead it fair and could be fair to everyone, but they've not been it. They have been dividing instead of trying to unite and it'll only get worse. It'll give the Republicans more reason to not work with them. It's hard for some to deal with her attitude she puts out about how every problem in every country is someone elses fault and yes it will lead to far less checks and balances because it'll just be what she wants through. It doesn't matter how many on each side are in there if you have a fair leader willing to work things out together and that goes for anyone in charge even back when the Republicans did it.

That's kinda how I felt when the Republicans took over Congress while Clinton was in the White House.

Hence my last line even when they did because they are all guilty. The people seeking the power in the parties aren't always the ones that should be in that position. Power gets to any of them in charge.

Don't you think it is sad that there are about 52 different brands of toilet paper and 20 brands of ketsup but only 2 major political parties in the US?

Seriously... I would love to see more parties get recognition.

I'm keeping my opinion to myself, though I agree that 2 parties is a crying shame.

The possibility of a filibister proof congress has me a little worried, I like to think that there can be someone who can stand up for what we believe. As for the number of parties...I wish we had more say in who we elect into the office of the President. I hate the electoral college system, it is out dated!

I never thought about it that way, but what a great analogy! Absolutely we need more than 2 viable parties!

I couldn't agree with you more here. I'd love to see a vote so close that, with 3rd party taking enough votes to throw the election to the House. They'd take another look that the election process after that.

TERM LIMITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gotta tell you...I am NOT a fan of term limits. I want the opportunity to employ the best person for the job, and when someone has done a good job, I shouldn't have to find another person just because that one has been doing a good job for too many years. There HAS to be another solution instead of getting rid of people who DO a good job.

Term limits can bring in some fresh ideas from new people and innovation in the ideas can be better than the same ol stuff. It could be like 2 terms in then have to sit one out then you can come back or something. I don't mind that but when people are bullied by the older people and treated the way some are it isn't very fair. There was a great Frontline on PBS that showed how both of this affected McCain and Obama last night. Obama has been ignored by his own party that had been out spending a good amount of their time trying to get McCain to their party becasue McCain doesn't like Bush that much even though people try to say they are the same. They really do not like each other and a good amount of McCain's friends are the old democrats. Kennedy and his buddies were trying to use him again them even though he didn't go for it at the same time Obama was being elected in and not given a word on stuff because he's a freshman. They were showing how in his first meeting he was in for Rice's confirmation and Biden was talking so much he passed his aide's a not that said Shoot. Me. Now. because they wouldn't listen to a word anyone else had to say so he was just sitting there having to wait on the big wigs to give him a chance. They all aren't the Mr Niceguy's there especially the ones that have been there a while. They are there to play hardball with not always the country in mind while doing it.
