and actually got yelled at tonight. She went out for coffee tonight. When she she got back to the campaign office there were two young men (their girlfriends were in the car) that came up to her and started screaming at her for supporting/working for Obama. Luckily the security guard (yes, sad, but the offices need security guards)was there and they got in their car and left. Very scary and she lives outside Philly in a good neighborhood. When she got home she took off her Obama stickers as a just in case.
What is going on???? I am just dumbfounded that this would happen.

Tensions are definitely high. I wish people would realize that both these men really do want to do good things in this country, they just have disagreements about how it should happen :shrug.
I hope your friend is okay!

That is just so sad, Sue. With the freedoms we are "supposed" to have in this country and to have to put up with that kind of abuse over what you believe in.:shrug

She's good just startled. Stuff like that is as bad as 3rd world countries by trying to scare and use intimidation just because you believe something differently. Of course she's going back tomorrow to do a very long day of campaign work.:)

What a couple of cowards! Two men verbally attacking a lone woman is pathetic. I'm glad they didn't scare her off - I know it would just renew my determination. Sending ((hugs)).

That's wrong. I'm glad she is ok!!
Do you guys think that elections are just going to get nastier and nastier as we continue on in the future?

If the trend of the past few weeks continue, things will get nastier probably and more irrelevant accusations will fly.

I wonder if it was in any way a "retaliation" for the woman who cried wolf about being attacked for the McCain stickers (http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/24/mccain.sticker/?iref=hpmostpop)on her car? I fear it will get worse before it gets better and it's such a shame and oh so wrong!

That is horrible, I'm so sorry for her. I have no issue with intelligent debate and discussion in the appropriate venues, but to harrangue someone because they support someone different than you is outrageous. What a sad state of our country.

We had horrible issues during the primaries here in my little town. It's all stupid.

someone at work this week (a coworker) was walking through saying "vote early, vote for McCain" to everyone. When he said it to me, I said "Too late. I voted early and I voted for Obama." He literally stood there speechless.
guess I should be glad it didn't come to blows? (I think I could take him. ;) )

it so shouldn't happen, but I'm not surprised at all......... stuff like this happens in all parts, not necessarily about politics... but about all sorts of things..........people get passionate and a little too worked up
so sorry that it happened to one of your friends

Unfortunately I think it's going to get worse this last week. I'm actually glad my state has early voting though my polling place is my police station.:)
Oh Jen...I'm sure you could take him.

I think it is awful. Here, where we are all allowed to vote for the candidate we choose, in a free country, people shouldn't be scared into changing their vote (or have someone attempt to change it).
I do think it will get worse in the last few weeks.
Our county had a huge vote this summer - Hyperion wanted to build an oil refinery 8 miles from my house. Things got so incredibly nasty. And, we live in a very small area. Some people still have makeshift coffins in their yards. We got letters in the mail from schoolchildren telling us we would all die if the refinery was built. Just going to the grocery store became unbearable with the people in the parking lot telling us which way to vote.
Blah. I understand being passionate about your views. But - so many people take it to a disrupting, rude level.
I'm glad your friend is ok. I'm sure it did startle her.

Our neighbor had her Obama sign taken from her yard and well as a bunch in the area. Some were even soaking in lighter fluid and lit on fire. Our neighbors just put a new sign up that said "you might take our Obama sign but you won't take out vote."
I think it is pathetic and I am not a Obama supporter. Some people just do not use their brains.

This is so unbelievably sad. I can't believe that grown people would resort to things like this on either side.

One old lady had her signs stolen from her yard a few times and decided to put up a camera. The thief was a 30-40-year-old woman who jumped out of her SUV to steal an old lady's Obama sign. :(

I don't get why anyone would want to steal signs. I may not agree with those voting for McCain, but I still like to see them especially when they have other signs in their yard -- it tells me which local candidates I don't want to vote for either. LOL. J/K I do my research. :p

Sue, I have been walking the beat non-stop for weeks now...you wouldn't even believe the stuff people say and do....I mean cars stopping while driving thru a neighborhood and starting trouble...these are a bunch of nutjobs with nothing better to do and clearly terrified that a man that they view as beneath him may be their leader as well as the leader of the free world, this jeopardizes & threatens every false and hateful notion they hold against those that are different. If they only knew how not beneath him he is and how regardless of what they think of him, that he will fight for them, even in the face of hatred and stupidity.
On the flip side, I would like to mention the bulk of what I see is positive and downright inspiring...never have I seen so many people feeling so positive and hopeful, asking what they can do to help, and on and on and on....people have also stopped to gush over how they normally don't vote or they just registered to vote because they feel so stringly this time around....it really is amazing what is going on out there.

I just think that elections bring out the Loonytics. It's a perfect opportunity for people to go over the top. Anyone who steals, name-calls or vandalizes isn't representative of anything other than poor human behavior.

First, kudos to you for volunteering. At least Obama has gotten my money LOL. The scary thing is that this men had no problem accosting a tiny blonde lady who's about 110 lbs. soaking wet. No respect for Obama or women in general. You're right in that I have never seen a nation so energized about their candidates. For me, Obama is like a breath of fresh air...new ideas and thinking. He thinks beyond and about issues relating to each other i.e. healthcare and education. If kids have healthcare they'll be less sick, will go to school more and test scores go up...kids learn more. I'm gushing now LOL

I just had to add this.
As we drove home from the mall today, we noticed one of our neighbor's McCain signs (a LARGE, billboard-type sign...) had been HIT BY A CAR. Yep, some asshole (edit it if you must...but it's true..) DROVE through their front yard, clear across the sidewalk to HIT IT and drove off. They put it right back up, and say they are not repairing the damaged sign or the HUGE ruts in their beautiful yard...
What is this country coming to?

WOW, I am totally flabbergasted at this thread, do people really disrespect other people that much that they can't accept another persons right to an opinion different from their own. What is this world coming to? :mad
SERIOUSLY!?!!! Some people should really be ashamed of themselves! UGH :shrug

Honestly - in the poorer areas people have copped to stealing signs because they can't afford to buy them. Sad really - to not be able to afford a 1-10 dollar sign depending on the place you get them...

to the OP: I think that's horrible that your friend had to go through that. There are some pretty angry people doing stupid things these past few weeks. I am praying that these kind of things don't continue to happen or escalate. If we want to have a kinder, gentler more respectful country, IMO it starts with us - one person at a time.

I suppose if someone stole my sign so they could respectfully display it in their own yard, I could forgive it. :shrug

I agree. Its awful. More people should log into forums like this and discuss the issues, even getting a little heated if they must, but keeping in mind that in the end we all want the same basic things. Its so sad that when someone is frustrated that the only way they can deal with it is through aggression and violence.

Beyond the political, though, I'm worried about our society when men feel justified in ganging together and treating a lone woman in this manner.

Beyond the political, though, I'm worried about our society when men feel justified in ganging together and treating a lone woman in this manner.
What is alarming to me is that the hostile men we have come across are of a mindset that as white men they are above all other humans.
This Saturday I had to canvass a home where the family happened to be walking in the front door, I was looking for the woman. When I started to explain the husband went ballistic, waving his arm and had his hands in my face, yelling at me and most disturbingly, turned and began yelling at her, he then told her not to dare open her mouth and literally shoved her in the front door and all this in front of the 2 young teen-aged sons. He then told me to get off his property and finished it up with a few really low choices of words regarding women and african-americans. If I was not on the campaign I would have had an answer for that creep.
Bullies. Disgusting.
