View Full Version : Lens Recommendations for Rebel XT?

Any recommendations for a new lens for my Canon Rebel XT? I'm interested in both a 50 mm lens and a zoom lens. They would be for amateur use only - to try to capture my three little ones on the go.

Also, if you don't have particular lens in mind, are there certain lens features I should look for? Thanks.

If you are able - go w/ Canon. You won't regret good glass.

What zoom range are you after? Do you want one all-in-one or a couple to cover the range? Used mainly indoors or outdoors? And what's your budget?

For the 50mm, pick up the Canon 1.8 version. I personally don't like its build quality but have very little to complain about the important stuff - very good image quality and it's also only about $75 online.

I recently bought the Tamron 28-75 f2.8. It's a great all around lens and not as pricey as the Canon lenses...under $400.

Ideally, I would like an all-in-one zoom, but I would be open to hearing about other good zoom lenses. I use it mainly indoors, and I would like to keep the cost down to $400 or less for the zoom.

I have been using a Canon 28-105 mm lens (1:3.5-4.5) that I transferred from my Rebel SLR to my DSLR. The lens has gotten a little beaten up over the years, and the pictures are now not always as sharp as I'd like.

I use a Canon 75-300 zoom for my kids sports photos, it does wonderful for all the action indoors (for basketball) and out. I got it at www.niceelectronics.com for I think about $375 or so but I could be wrong because I got it at the same time as my external flash and I could be mixing up the prices.

I own a 50 as well, and I have thought about buying an extension tube (I found a set of 3 different magnifications that can be used individually or together) because they are relatively inexpensive and offer more versatility to what you already own.

Definitely get yourself the 50 m 1.8 -- i LOVE it -- barely leaves my camera -- good quality for the money :)
