I am buying a DSLR and wondering if anyone has a preference of Canon vs. Nikon?
Any info you can give me would help.
I am just using it for family - not professional shots.

Thanks.

I love my Canon! My first Canon was a PowerShot A75 and that thing (is)was durable and took great pictures! The first summer I had it I dragged it across sand dunes and up a mountain...it came back dented and bent out of shape, but still works wonders (it's been 4 years since then). This summer I bought a new canon (powershot S215), and I love it too. I don't know about Nikon, but I know I love my canons! Goodluck deciding!

I think it is all personal preference! You might want to go hold both in your hands at a camera shop and decide after feeling them :)

Ditto the above... lots of personal preference... lots to do with how they feel in your hands.

I decided on Nikon because I believe they produce fabulous colors straight out of camera... it's just something Nikon does very well.
Canons seem to be very well at handling higher ISOs without grain.

It's really just a personal preference, you can't go wrong with either. I have a Canon DSLR simply because I already had a P&S Canon that I loved.
I agree with what others have said, go to the store and check out how they feel.

You also might want to check out http://www.dpreview.com/. In their Buying Guide section you can do a side-by-side comparision which I found useful when I was trying to decide what to buy.

Good luck with your decision!

Like everyone said it is personal preference! Go hold them both in your hands and if you still can't choose see which one you can find on sale! Both are great cameras both take terrific photos.

I LOVE my Nikon, I've always been a Nikon girl!

I've always heard that Canons tend to shoot colors a bit cooler, and Nikons a bit warmer. So that may help you decide as well! I have also always heard that Nikon glass (a term for lenses) is superior.

A fun fact.... All 3 CSI's use Nikons to shoot crime scenes, LOL!

Thanks ladies!
I'm going shopping with my father who used to be a professional and he is heavily biased for Nikon so I just wanted to get other opinions. I am definitely going to try them both out before buying!

Hey C....

just a thought, but if your dad is a big advocate for Nikons, might you some day inherit his Nikon lenses and such? You could still use them on a new Digi Nikon! Or at least borrow and such!

My hubby and I took the plunge and bought a Nikon D70s on Sunday. I'm on pins and needles waiting for it to arrive.

I started out looking at the Rebel XT or XTi after reading what many people had to say.

We went to the store and tried out the cameras. My hubby pointed out something I hadn't even thought about and which ultimately caused me to change my mind from Canon to Nikon. He told me to pay attention to how I shoot and decide which camera was most comfortable.

My left eye is stronger than my right which means I look through the viewfinder with my left eye not my right like most people. This means more of my face is behind the camera. I found that the wider body of the Nikon kept my fingers out of my face and I felt less cramped.

I definately recommend going to a store and "test driving" the cameras before making your mind up. :-)

Both Canon's and Nikons are excellent camera's. Nikon does have some amazing glass though but their are adv and dis to each. I own a Canon Digi Rebel XT and I love it!

I ended up with a Canon only because my DH could remember a word like "Rebel" but not a bunch of letters and numbers. So he went with the sure thing.
