I have PSE 5 at home that I am reasonably familiar with, and our school has recently purchased PSE 6. I am wanting to do up some signage for our library and am having trouble.
In PSE 5, I just drag and drop elements etc onto my work with no probs...in PSE 6, when I try and use the same method I have a lot of trouble. When I drop elements (for instance) onto my work it brings with it a grey background...even if though it doesn't have a background in the original piece of work...WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? please help me....I am feeling really dumb!!

Try doing it the opposite way. Not from your photobin and into your layout, but drag the element from it's window and DOWN to your layout in the photobin. You can also have both your layout and your element open and drag between windows. Dragging from your photobin and into your layout handles the png file as a smart object and as you say, creates a white/grey background around your element. That way works fine only with photos(jpg) but not with elements(png).

Yes, that happens when you drag with the bin in the wrong direction.

I have some tutorials and a free video that might help you (http://www.hummiesworld.com/Course1.html).
