Iīm getting my first DSLR camera but I canīt make up my mind betwen Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 Lens (Black) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007QKN22/ref=ord_cart_shr/103-3802616-5933424?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance) - Canon or Nikon D50 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor Lens (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0009GZANC/ref=ord_cart_shr/103-3802616-5933424?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance) - Nikon

They are pretty much the same price, so what features do you consider are the ones that should make choose

Thanks a lot for your help

Canon has a new 10mp rebel XTi out that I would look into, I have seen lots of good stuff on this one :)

I have both.... The canon 10mp rebel Xti, and a Nikon D70. I personally LOVE the Nikon, it is a wonderful camera, with a great "feel" for me. Compared to the Nikon, I don't like the canon, it "feels" cheesier, it's mostly plastic instead of metal, and I LOVE the lens that the Nikon came with, I HATE the lens that the Canon came with. I don't feel like the pics are as clear as they should be... But DH bought me a wonderful lens for the Canon, so that's what I'm using as my main camera right now... It is a little lighter than the Nikon (but not once you have the telephoto on it).... Anyway, I would try them both and see how the feel to you, my biggest advice would be to not get the canon kit lens...

That's the best advice I had heard on the subject, to be honest. Before I picked out my new camera, I had done a lot of reading and was leaning toward a Nikon. Went to the store and ended up liking the feel of the Canon Rebel in my hands, so that's what I went with. Either camera brand is great.

I agree--go try them both out. I know I made at least 3 trips to Circuit City to look at both the Cannon and the Nikon models before making my final choice.

In the beginning I was set on the Cannon but ended up with the Nikon D70s which I absolutely love because it felt "right" to me in the end. It really turns out to be a personal preference.

I just had the Rebel xti in my hands and the D80 Digital SLR.

Personally I liked the Nikon D80. And the salesperson said the Rebel's lens wasn't very good quality.

I just bought an Olympus Evolt E-500 :) I havent gotten it yet, but cant wait...features and price are comparable to the Nikon and Canon, I got a great deal on mine at dell 800 bucks and it comes with 2 lenses...I also checked the reveiws on several sites, and it got better reveiws then the canon did.

The poor Canon kit lens gets a bad rap. I've gotten great results with it **when using it within its limitations** - I think this is the key. It's not a low light lens, so it's pretty crappy in poorly lit environments (such as stores, which is probably the extent the salespeople would use them IMO) but used in good lighting and at an appropriate focal length and distance, it can get some sharp results. A better lens will help but even my moderately expensive (I'm talking well over 1k) lenses have limitations, you just have to know what lens is best for the task at hand. Ok, rant over...

I agree with everyone who says try them out in a store - even if that's not where you buy it from. They have a fairly similar feature set and the differences in image quality are small enough that it won't really matter, but a camera that doesn't feel right in your hands will drive you mad regardless of the shot it produces. I personally hate the look and feel of Nikon and Canon is far more natural for me. Oh and also look at their accessory line up, particularly lenses. One of my main reasons for going with Canon was that it has a couple of specialist lenses that I knew I'd need eventually and no other major manufacturer has in their line up.

Thanks everyone for their advice... so yesterday after reading everybodys comments I made up my mind, I kind of liked the Nikon better so I went and ordered that one, but not the D50 which I was originally considering but the D70S. Now I canīt wait enough to get it, and hopefully my DH (because this is his christmas gift to me) will let me use it before christmas eve.

Again, thanks a lot for your advice

Lucy

Just tell your DH that you need to practice with it, so you can get perfect christmas morning pictures :)

Hey it worked for me LOL

Hope you enjoy it Lucy! I loved the feel of the Nikon - the finish isn't smooth like the Canon. I liked the texture.
