View Full Version : On behalf of DST

Shannon

Hi everyone :) <--- See my smiley face? That's to start off so that you all know this is said with kindness and respect. ;)

I did know that the community at DST would eventually get big enough that the forum would start to have some negative shadows on it. Erick has been the moderator of a popular magazine for years so this isn't a new thing for us. We know how large forums work. I was probably being a little naive though because I've been so proud of how positive and helpful and uplifiting DST is that for some reason, I hoped it would stay just that way. I mean, that's really a lot easier on me right? :lol A girl can hope!

I am still immensely proud of DST and all of the positive attitudes, respectful debates, welcoming attitudes, etc. However, I believe that we will see seasons of negativity, just like any other forum. It's normal, it's natural, even healthy.

It's stressful for me because this site is my business. I want newcomers to come online and see a welcoming and friendly place to be and that is really what I've strived for all along. I pour so much of myself into this community and making this place a home for all of us. My vision for DST has been that it would be a valuable resource for digital scrappers, designers and stores. Yes, it was built on the idea of freedom. Although I did mean the freedom to post links and talk about our favorite products, I see that the freedom to say certain things is also very important to some of you.

So I need to say this, on behalf of DST - those threads that have negative connotations, yes, those can be found at DST. But that isn't what DST is. Those are the views of the people who post. So please do not say "DST is a negative place" or "DST is cliquish". No, we're not. We are a positive and welcoming site. And sometimes there are negative threads and sometimes there will be hurt feelings in the face of conflict. But that does not define this place.

As for myself, I do not enjoy this much negativity. I'm too close to the situation. This site is my baby and I worry too much that newcomers will be put off by the negativity. I can't let myself carry that much burden and it's probably best if I not participate in the negative threads. I've been doing all that I can in the hopes of preserving DST's reputation. But I can't do that by fighting to the death in a heated thread in an attempt to resolve things. I can't resolve it all. I can't keep making rules to accomodate every complaint just to show that DST cares enough to actually take action. We've taken action. We've listened. We've responded. We've cared. But we cannot do it all. I know I can't make everyone happy all of the time. So please remember that what DST is, is a resource site that provides opportunities, information, education and inspiration. And everything else, well, those are things that can be found at DST but that is not what DST is.

I do hope that we can all remember that we choose what has the power to affect us. We choose which threads we want to be involved in. If you like a healthy debate, by all means. If you feel there are "too many negative threads" then please, start some light-hearted or positive threads. Participate in the ones that have no debate topics whatsoever. You all have the power to influence the atmosphere here. Please take advantage of that. There's room for all of it.

Please do not look for things to complain about. I guarantee you that in a forum this size, you're gonna be able to find something you don't like. Please be respectful to those of us who are working hard to make this a nice place for you. Yes, you're free to speak your mind. But also remember, not everything can go your way. You may be an active member, gold member, diamond member, advertiser - but ultimately, I am the one who answers for this site and the final decisions need to be mine. I ask for opinions because I care to hear your answers. But I reserve the right to make the decision based on my own instincts. No one knows DST or the vision for DST better then me and I hope that you all have seen over the past few months that my intentions are pure and my heart is sincere. I hope that you can trust me enough to allow me to do what I feel is best for DST as a whole, even if that is not what you prefer as an individual.

(P.S. I'm not locking this thread because I know that drives people nuts. :lol But don't feel you have to respond to this. I just needed to say it.)

What a lovely post, Shannon.

I have no complaints about DST.

Well, OK, maybe one...ya'll ain't no good for m' pocketbook!

I sure had a lot more money in my Paypal account when I was blissfully ignorant. Then I had to start coming here and your oh-so-helpful members enlightened me a little TOO well...

Oh well, it's all good until my hubby finds out!

Shannon, you are a sweetie. I have never thought DST was a negative place. Negative threads now and then, yeah sure, but you'll have that. If I don't want that negative energy spread into my life, I am free to not open that thread and read. Actually, as someone who has been on a variety of forums, I would say our "negative" is actually pretty "positive" compared to what is out there. I think you are doing a great job with DST. It rocks, you rock. Hey babe, it's all good!!! :)

Shannon, I don't usually say a lot, but I wanted to jump in here. I happen to remember how unhappy I was at the other site when you invited me to join this one. I don't always feel a part of what is going on here, but that is normal I think. I believe that you have done and are doing a wonderful job here at DST and that you handle things better than anyone I know could have done or should be doing. I applaud you and your darling hubby for all of your hard work and understanding. Thank you for a place where I can speak my mind should I chose to do so. Thank you for introducing me to many, many wonderful artists in this community. To others who feel that they have had their feelings hurt, I would suggest that it is time to forgive and forget and move on. I think sometimes we have to make a choice to move on, even when we don't "feel" like it, but that's just my honest opinion.

I only live about 65 miles from you, and I if I didn't have to drive the interstate (hehe) I would come over and take you out for a latte, girl--and a sweet treat, because you sure deserve one. Keep up the good work, Shannon and don't let the awesome responsibility of DST get you down. If there is anything I can do to make your load lighter, please let me know.

Shannon,

Thank you for posting such a hearfelt message. It is good to remind us that DST is a separate entity from the members. As far as the negative posts go, I agree that people do not have to read and/or respond to them. Sometimes they are like a weed and the more *fertilizer* they get the more they grow. I totally understand why you have locked some threads and it doesn't bother me in the least. You do a great job with the site and we are very proud of you. I think you missed your calling though and you should be teaching diplomacy classes. I would be one of the first ones to sign up:)

Aw, Shannon, you should just stop worrying. This site is the success it is because of you! You truly do deserve the title Miss Congeniality.

And I agree with an earlier poster. THe only gripe I have with this site is that because of it I'm spending about 8x the money I spent on 2Peas. It's just tooooo easy here to see all the gorgeous stuff our designers are putting on market.

You need to start a 12-step program for some of us junkies.

I've always felt that this site is warm and welcoming to all regardless of whether you are a designer or CT member from Scrappywebsite A, B, or C. There's bound to be differences of opinion every now and then and I think you are doing a great job of moderating those issues when the need arises.

Thank you Shannon for all your hard work and this wonderful place!

Oh Shannon... you just have such a big heart! And it really shows in everything you do! The reason why everyone loves this place so much is because it "IS" a reflection of you! Warm, Kind, Funny, Supportive..... As hard as it is, I think the decision to stay out of the negative threads, is a very wise one. You need to remember that you are not responsible for the actions of others. Yes, you are the "bones" that hold this place together... but as far as opinions, threads and posts - healthy or unhealthy go, you can't be responsible for the opinions and actions of all that reside here. Sometimes we just hang ourselves with our words, kwim? And everyone will draw their own conclusion of the character of others, based on their own words... I can personally say that your actions (words) have led me to believe that you are a woman of substance, strong character. You are honest, wear your heart on your sleeve, funny, compassionate and beautiful to boot! You are loved by so many Shannon and I think that it is time that you take the burden of peace maker off of your shoulders. I hope this all makes sense! LOL I can't speak for anyone else, but I, for one, thank God that you take the time to make this place happen! You don't have to..... but you do and I am so grateful to you for it!
Hugs,
Christina

Shannon, I may not speak out too much around here, but I wanted you to know that I LOVE this place. I am here at least daily, sometimes several times a day. It has been a great place to learn about digiscrapping as well as just hang out. I have been so impressed with your comments on some of the more controversal threads lately. You seem like such a caring, genuine person...we are lucky to have you!

beautifully said...as always.

i wholeheartedly agree.

honestly, i just don't get the negativity. digital scrapbooking is not life. it's a wonderful form of artistic expression, but it is NOT life! i do not understand how upset people get over such insignificant things (in the grand scheme of things). now if you mess with my family that's a whole different thing...lol.

i'm going to take your advice and ignore the negative from here on out.

thanks for sharing your heart and for being you.

Shannon, you are the epitome of grace and love. You care so much about us and this forum and it shows.

An occasional negative thread will NEVER drive me away from home and even when I disagree STRONGly with someone, I always have the right to just walk away - and I aspire to do that every time rather than cause waves. *I* know what I believe and that's enough for me. :-)

Shannon, I think you make great decisions girl! You mustn't feel we expect you to be able to 'control' every thread. I don't think you should worry about anyone being driven away from the site or not wanting to get involved - I think the positive outways the negative 99:1 - and I'm ignoring that 1%!!!
I know this is your baby, but I hope you enjoy it as much as we all do. I would hate the pressure/burden to take away from that.
You got a load of friends and admirers here.

Yes this place is the best! Well said Shannon and I'd like to post that I'm on here all day and evening and 99% is great and that other stuff I CHOOSE to read and say Que Sera Sera.

I do not believe in negativity never had and everyone has their opinions but I choose not to go there because there is so many bigger things in the world instead of petty things like I can't buy anything because nothing new on the site. Go somewhere else and shop there is lots of pretty things out there.
I'm not trying to start anything just letting you know that DST is a positive place and I enjoy it very much and keep up the good work.

Thanks

Shannon,

I feel bad cause it's obvious that you've been burdened by some recent threads and you're feeling responsible for every post made here. But, please give yourself a break! DST is an awesome community and a few threads with controversy is not going to change that!

You cannot be responsible for every opinion expressed here. I personally think DST is an extremely positive place! I'm still amazed that we had a religion thread and everyone remained civil, respectful and courteous! I bet there's not another message board anywhere where that could happen :D

Just like life is what you make it, I believe that my experience on this board is what I make it. I have the choice to read and participate in a multitude of threads. Personally, I don't deal with conflict well so I often choose not to participate in threads if I think they are going to bring me down or cause me stress. Although I LOVE to debate, I've experienced how messages online can be easily misunderstood. The one time I participated in a controversial thread, it kept me up at night, so I just don't do it anymore.

Please don't feel bad. I think this community is the most welcoming, inclusive community that you can find anywhere online.

Big hugs to you!

I haven't been here for long at all but, already, it's the one place I visit on a daily basis, not only for the wealth of valuable information but because I feel a different kind of attitude here, one that is pushed to be supportive and friendly. There will always be negative people and negative posts... and you're right, you can't make every single person happy, but that's the reality!

In the short time that I have been coming here the things that I have learned are just invaluable and I am lost if I don't come here at least once a day. I don't post a lot but I read tons and I want to say that you rawk, this place rawks, and you are doing a great job with this site. Don't let a few things take away from all the positives that this site provides. Remember science (two negatives always make a positive) and this this site is definitely positive!!!!

Your post is beautifully written and well thought out Shannon,, I've liked DST since day 1,, but not had as much time as I would have liked to participate,, hopefully, that will change some now, I'm determined to make changes,, and be more organised.

I guess it's human nature that where such a large volume of people meet, there will be some negativity,, I may read it,, but I rarely comment on it,, sometimes people just need to get things off their chest, I appreciate that.

On the whole, the digi scrapping community is one of the most caring, heart-warming, loving and kind communities I have ever come across,,, and hey, I have rows with my sister but I still love her!
Hugs
