I don't have a studio, nor any spare money for a proper backdrop and stand - so I improvised!

I bought some black drill material, and sewed it together to make a backdrop, and tyhen hung it on a rope in front of some windows. (in fact - the windows were to the side). I had enough material so that the floor was covered too.

Then I got out my brand new 50mm lens and started shooting - here's what I ended up with!!!!!!

These were so much fun - and with so little equipment. I couldn't use a tripod- coz they moved around WAY too much!

There's more HERE (http://www.scallywagsnstuff.com/gallery/index.php?level=album&id=9) if you want to have a peek!!!!

So fun! We also improvised last year for our holiday shots cuz I hadn't picked up any studio gear yet. I think many photographers do similarly. Good for you!

Oh great job! May I ask what is drill material? I really want to create a cheap backdrop (preferably in white) here too, any suggestions?

I'm not sure what drill material is, but I used black velvet and it worked great!

Um - maybe drill was the wrong word:) It's basically just heavy material - all cotton.

Looks like they had fun. I have a gray backdrop, but really need a black one too. Any advice on how to get great white background photos?

I haven't tried a white background as yet - I need to go back to the 'material store' (isn't that a haberdashery - see - I can't spell it - that's why I chose material shop!!), and get some white 'stuff' (full of technical jargon today!!!).

I'm still working on getting white drops really white. However, it helps to have studio lights. I have also done this outside on a sunny day - set up a sheet behind the boys and then used a reflector to help fill in the shadow areas.
