my son just finished his colonial history studies in school, and we're getting ready for a trip to williamsburg and DC. any great kits i should think about? :)

I haven't seen anything like this on the market. I will have to check back - my in-laws do reinacting!

I don't know if this fits the bill or not because it's centered around the revolution, but Heritage Scrap (www.heritagescrap.com) has this one from Jean Daugherty, which I've linked:

We might have other things that work because we try to create historically significant papers and elements, so if you have time to look around you might find something. .
