Ahh!! I get it.

To answer your question, no. I let my kids be kids.

LOL...I think you can only use a certain amount of characthers in the subject line so I had to get creative!!! :D

We are! My DD's teacher gave us a packet of problems for the summer. We're also doing a summer before 3rd grade workbook and the usual reading etc. We've been doing it in the mornings after she has some chill time. When she's done it's free time.

not really any workbooks here. they have been playing on the computer a lot doing learning games and stuff. (of course, mine are only preschoolers and one going into kindergarten)

my oldest (going into kinder) likes for me to write down addition and subtraction problems so that he can work on him (thats just his personality, he'd rather do that then go outside and play  )

ROFL at the subject line!

Yes, we're doing bridge studies. We're doing some unit studies to keep us fresh, but nothing intense. We do handwriting to go along with it. Youngest is doing starfall.com for letters, oldest is doing some math and geography games from DiscoveryKids.com

We dont' have a big schedule in the summer..
I try to keep daily routine stuff normal..meals, chores, reading time..but we kind of do whatever, whenever.

we're on year round here, but the track that DS is on doesn't go back until August. He's acutally very sad. So, if we get the notice that we're moving, I'm changing his track so he'll go back in a couple weeks. He's SO excited! As for computer games, all we do is educational. I HIGHLY recommend Zoo Tycoon 2 with extension pack. Great game, even for Mom and Dad.

We are also doing the bridge programs for my 5 & 7 yr olds. Our school sent home a 1st gr. Math SOL workbook to keep my dd fresh with her math. I am also adding in 20 minutes of chinese/french/spanish (we are taking turns) a day. I figure this way with 20 minutes of language, 20 minutes of bridge and 15 minutes of Piano, and maybe 30 minutes of computer play, we will keep up for the coming year...especially with the Chinese as it will get harder next year! Our schools here in Fairfax County are teaching mandatory Manderine Chinese every year through 12th grade

I thought perhaps 1 hour out of a 12 hour day wouldn't be too much, especially if I spread it out throughout the day! I believe that kids need to be kids too but they also need to keep up educationally so their minds won't melt, LOL!

Thanks for sharing your routines...It helps when creating our own.

:)

How cool is that?! And who'd ever thought in VA too. They can't even get Spanish into the schools in CA. I really think languages should be taught at MUCH younger ages. Our boys have picked up ASL and my oldest is looking forward to learing Korean if we move.

LOL at your subject line!

We're not doing anything 'official'

Nick is 6 and heading into 1st grade. We do daily reading-minimum of 20 minutes (if he's doing the reading).

He has lots of JumpStart computer programs that he's loving-reading, math, etc.

I also have him write at least once a day-something-a letter to his cousins, a note to me, a story to go along with one of the bajillion pictures he draws all day long! LOL

Huh - that's pretty cool - why was it that the choice in languages?

My oldest is on his last week of summer school for math. I was thinking I should find some worksheets for him- maybe work on them 20 minutes a day in the morning? On the other hand, I don't want him to hate math because of this, so I'm hoping to find some answers from you guys.

I THINK Bejing is our sister city...I'm not sure...Id have to look it up. The economic powers that be say that Bejing will be the next superpower in 20 years and the school system would like the students to be able to compete with the workforce there.

The high schools in our area are ranked quite a bit and because of the competitive nature and the AP and IB programs they "push" academics to the extreme! If you are from Fairfax County here in Virginia, to get into William & Mary or UVA, you have to have a 92 or better and strong SAT scores. The competition scares the bewhova's out of me regarding my children. Since were paying for the VA prepaid college program we'd like our children to consider firstly a VA School...silly isn't it to be worried about this when your child is just finishing up 1st grade

Anyway, we just expect our children to put forth their best efforts and if their grades fall into a category that doesn't push them in the direction of GT, then that is ok...we just want them to do their best as long as we provide them with the instruments to do so. We don't push like that.

LOL at the subject line!

We're not doing anything official here, as per the 'let them be kids' method. I encourage my two older boys to read daily - not a problem for my nine yr old, but my nearly 13 yr old is another story. Since their first full day back at school is July 19th, I feel like their short summer break is just flying by all too quickly and I haven't done enough in this department.

My two younger boys spend a lot of time coloring, painting, drawing...year round. I don't have a much of a schedule for them either (other than the bedtime routine) - just let them set the pace. My four yr old asked me to print a banana for him to paint today, so that's what we're doing as our activity after lunch - painting bananas. And for good measure we'll read 'The B Book' before naptime!

Not silly at all. VERY smart! My parents didn't prepare for me to go the college the way I would have hoped or thought for that matter. Really disappointing when you're told OK, you can go there then told you can't after you've already graduated! :x

Yep...things are so different now...thank goodness for the prepaid programs!!! With three hopefully going to college...you have to prepare as much as you can.

we don't do anything scheduled or formal yet since dd is only 3 1/2 but when she wants, we do her workbooks, working on her letter recognition (she has uppers but not all lowers!) or "big" numbers. she practices her writing everyday but that is because she loves to do her scrapbooking and is often making cards for daddy or grandma or nana! lol

I was talking to some friends that live in your neck of the woods (Fairfax County) and haven't heard about the Chinese thing. Is it just your school? Are they in public school??

I was just curious because with one of them we have spent a ton of time talking foreign languages! She said there is an immersion Japanese School - each day 1/2 English and 1/2 Japanese, but hasn't heard of what you are talking about.

Thanks!!

Hi Tracy,

We are a Marshall tier and since we, along with one other elementary school, have a strong volunteer group and PTA involvement at our elementary school, they placed us with the program for the 1st and 2nd graders. These grades and any subsequent students coming into the school system will continue with the chinese language program through the 12th grade. It was stated in a letter sent home from the Fairfax County School Board that they would continue through to other schools...I just don't know when.

I am linking you to an article regarding the language course:

I totally laughed out loud at your subjuect line.

I have 2.5 year old twins, so no work books here, just practicing numbers, letters, ABC's etc., getting ready for pre-school which starts in August!!

I'll be letting ds work in some of his books that were "left over" from this past school year just to keep him refreshed but we won't be working on them every day, maybe just twice a week :)

Katie just finished up Kindergarten and as a present on her last day of school her teacher gave each of the kids a workbook and set of cut apart mini phonics books to work on over the summer. They're from www.starfall.com and seem to be really cute. So we're working through those this summer.

We also have some GREAT learning games for the computer that she really enjoys. I cant say enough good things about the I SPY computer games - so so much fun!

Just reading 20 minutes a day. Our kinder is all day here and she was pretty burned out by the end of school. I want her to just relax and have fun.
