I feel so dense here when everyone is popping up with beautiful LOs using her sketch and I don't know where/how to start on those.

Any help, please? My brain just isn't working today!

Thanks!

What software are you using? I use PSPX and use the magic wand to choose then fill each layer. I do not have PS so I do not know how to do it.

If you are using PSE, you can follow my tutorial here:
http://www.ssreflections.com/jen.html (click on the link for the instructions). The only thing you want to do different is hit CTRL-G instead of CTRL-ALT-G. (Layer -> Group with Previous).

If you use PSP, do what lcbannon said!

Yeah!!!! Thank you so much!!! I use PS... Not sure why but I thought it would be different than using Jen's sketches! lol I told you that my brain wasn't functioning today!

Jen, I love your sketches too! I'll make sure to post my LOs here once I get some done!

Thanks to both of you!

I found the website scrapmaps.com ( awesome ) and have downloaded some sketches from Jen Caputo... but I really havn't figured out how to use them! Could anyone here help? I use Paint Shop Pro X. I have heard people say that you can select areas to fill with 'paper', but I can't open some in my program, and the ones I can are very small. I'm so new to this - any advice?

you have to download the zip files, unzip them, and then open them from PSP. Do not just save the jpeg files, they do not work the same and arent big enough.

Hi!
I just bought Jen's first set of sketches and have been playing. It could go really fast, except I need some help. Can you help me out???

I can get the papers to fill in perfectly. When I go to fill in the pictures, it's not going well. They place funny--what I mean is they just fill in and you can't center them or make them look good. Also, when I go to fill in a picture in another block, it will double them up--repeat the pattern I am guessing.

Please help me with the pictures, otherwise the sketches are a complete waste!!!

Also, I can't figure out how to get them on different layers so i can do drop shadows.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi!

I just posted about PSP X and not being able to do things---when I open the Tiff sketches in my program, they do not show up as layered--they are just one background. Is that right?

I only caught this because I have a trial of PS and just opened it there and it has lots of layers.

Is anyone else seeing this too??

Thanks so much!
Jen

You have to drag the photos to make them match - use the MOVE tool in photoshop (press V). If the photo is too big or too small, then use TRANSFORM tool (Ctrl + T) and make it fit. Remember to press SHIFT down while dragging, so the proportions will stay the same.

When you are done with fitting the papers and photos, then merge the two layers (clipping mask and sketch layer) and then add dropshadows, tears, ink and so on. This is what I do and it works like a charm :)

Hope this helped!

In PSP they do not open layered, I'm actually chatting with some people at Corel to see if we can get this feature implemented!!!!

That is why I created the seperate PSP tutorial since they don't work like they do in Photoshop. You seem to have a few issues so let's try to work through them.

1. You can't get the papers on different layers.
this is an easy one. Just create a new layer before you use the paint bucket tool. So do all of your selecting on the base layer but then create a new layer before you fill the selection. make sense?

2. The photos don't work so hot with the paint bucket
Ok, there is another method that is pretty easy to use and I think it will be much better for photos.
Copy and paste your photo onto the sketch. Move it to the position and size you want. Now, hide that layer, and use your magic wand to select the portion of the sketch that you want to replace. Make your photo visible again, then hit Ctrl-Shift-I (for select inverse). With the photo layer selected, hit delete. that should delete all of the photo except what goes in the template.

give it a try!!

Hi!
Thanks so much Jen for giving me the added directions for using your sketches. As you can tell, I'm not all that knowledgeable about PSP or these kinds of programs to begin with so I needed the extra hand-holding!

I tried both pieces of advice about the layers and getting the pictures on there. Once I'm done with the layout, I'll post it and brag about you!

Thanks so much!

Jen, Just FYI, if you want to try my sketches (I have a freebie pack at digiscrappin.biz) they do open layered in PSP. :)

You may want to try and see what your preference is :) If you need any help , let me know!

I feel stupid but even after reading Jen's tutorial I can't get it to work. I need VERY specific instructions I guess. LOL! Can someone help me please?? I use PSE3.

I opened up the template and it appears over in the layers palette. I highlighted one of the layers in the layers palette, the matte palette. Then I opened up the paper I wanted to use as my matte. Here's where I get lost. While the paper is open in my work station I hit Ctrl A. Then I went down to the template in the photo bin and hit Ctrl V. It did put the paper in the template but it is not the matte. So I tried Ctrl Alt G. Nothing.

Help please??

In your layers palette, make sure the paper is just above the matte. Then click ctrl+g (in pse3 you don't need the alt).

Try that :)

Oh my gosh!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! That was so Easy!! LOL!

Now another stupid question. Although I've been digi scrappin almost a year I'm embarrased to say that there is still SO much I don't know how to do in PSE3. It just so happened that my paper was directly above the matte in the layers palette. But what if it wasn't? How do I change the order of things over in the layers palette?

I normally just click on the layer I want and drag it to where I want it to be in the stack ...

However, ctrl and one of the brackets should work as well to move it up and down

ctrl [ for down and ctrl ] for up

I know this works in PS; I think it will work in PSE also.

You can also make sure it's above by selecting the layer you want to replace, then paste (or drag) your paper on top of it. I'm so glad you've figured it out, it's so fun to learn how to do new tricks with your software!

Hi Kim!
I just want to let you know that I was playing with your freebie sketch in PSP X and it is so much easier when the layers are available (either that or my learning curve was just so steep at first)! I saw that you have some sketches up at digiscrappin biz and will be getting them. Thanks so much and I will probably be bugging you for help again! I can't wait to finish a lo using them! Any chance of you creating some 2 page lo sketches???????????

Thanks again!
Jen
