I get the same effect when I adjust either one. Can someone clarify the difference between the two? Thanks!

I am in the negative range in my PS knowledge, but my experience is that if you alter the opacity, the entire layer (including applied styles) will fade; however, if you just change the fill, the layer styles will remain (it's how you would make vellum looking paper, for example, where you would still need a slight bevel and drop shadow but want the opacity of the interior to fade).
I find that Tandika reduces the fill layer to 0 a lot in her tutorials on an empty layer that is just being used to add a style on top of a layer that already has a style. I know that doesn't make a lot of sense and I am just beginning to get a grasp on it. Sorry I can't explain it better.
That's my experience with it. HTH a little!

Right so if you just reduce the fill, you can have a clear acrylic alpha because you still get the bevel styel showing while the color fades away.

Ok. I'm pretty sure I get it. I'll have to play with it. Thanks!
