I have a pretty standard tripod (but I want a new one, so I'm checking back in here for suggestions!). I recently got a remote and I love it!
It's this one Canon Remote (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004WCIC/002-4651691-0545636?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=502394)

yup, i have the same remote as Julie - I love it!!!! It snaps right onto your camera strap so you can pull it off whenever you need it and don't have to worry about losing it in your bag. it rocks!

I got the one listed as an accessory for my Rebel. It is so tiny and snaps onto the strap. I think it is the same one Jen mentioned. I had a sturdy tripod but since it is a little heavy I bought a $15 one that is very lightweight at Walmart to take in the camera bag. It is not terrific quality but it works well enough to use as a portable one. The professional grade tripod is just to heavy to take on trips.

I have the wired remote (RS-60E3) since the wireless works in front of the camera and I wanted to be behind. I love it, very tiny and has a shutter lock so I can leave it open for long exposures without having to hold the button down. Just a warning, Amazon don't list the digital models as compatible with this - they need to update their listing, it definitely is!

For a lightweight tripod, I have a Velbon Ultra Luxi that holds up pretty well but I only use it for travel since it's not the sturdiest when you compare it to my favourites, Manfrotto/Bogen.
