View Full Version : New Rebel - Buyers Guilt

Friday night I bought a Rebel XT w/kit lense at Costco for $699, and I picked up the 50m 1.8 lens at Ritz Camera yesterday.
Did anyone else go through buyers remorse?
Yesterday we went on a short day trip & I took 230 pictures, about half with each lense. I got some really decent shots - especially since I didn't know what I was doing.
I'm looking for a local photography class I can take, but in the meantime does anyone know an online class they recommend?

I have a friend who recently took an AMAZING online photography course and LOVED it. It was taught by Vik Ornstein and the feedback was amazing. She's on vacation now, but I will send her an email to get the details from her!

I think you'll get over that pretty quickly. :) I say enjoy your new camera. The images you'll get will make you happy so it's money well spent.

I am one of those people who love cameras & love electronics/gadgets.
I have a Canon A620 (LOVE this point & shoot), a Pentax Optio SV, a Kodak EasyShare DX6490, and 2 FUJI finepix (can't remember the models).
I bought the rebel because I can't get the low light shots I want with the A620. It just isn't possible.
My boyfriend's son & his wife are expecting a baby in two months, and they don't have a camera as nice as any of my point & shoots. I am going to give them either the Pentax or the Kodak.
I know that I will love the rebel. (plus I'm going to get some great low light pics of the new baby!)
Besides the online class/local class - what books are good?

Oh my - I'm loving my new Rebel that I only got a couple of months ago and I'm one of those people who don't know much about photographer. Even just pointing and shooting I can totally see a difference in the pixs....maybe not on the camera, but definitely when u/l to my computer and I haven't even seen them printed out yet.
I just got the 50mm 1.8 yesterday and that's taking some getting used to. It does take much better indoor photos in the evening, but I'm having to get used to not being able to manually zoom in w/my hands and that I can't shot too close up.

I'm just chiming in to say even when I research my purchase for months beforehand, I still *always* have buyers remorse when it comes to camera stuff. Until I get THAT shot which I knew I wouldn't be able to get with any previous equipment. Then I'm happy. :)
Congrats on your purchase, you will love it!

Karen - print some shots! I've printed several and they are absolutely beautiful.
Lauren - I did research this purchase & am the same way. I knew I was going to get the rebel and I thought I'd wait until Christmas. Getting it now was not in my plan.
I'm so excited to learn what this baby can do!
Now to find a class....................

I'd love to take a class. I'm working through the online Canon class but I'm a more hands on listen to the person tell me what to do, walk me through it instead of an online kinda learner. I'm looking at filters...does anyone have any top filter picks??

I had some guilt/remorse until I put the card in and started snapping pictures. Usually when I buy something expensive or get a nice gift like this, I hesitate to take it out of the wrapping and use it because in the back of my mind I'm already planning to return it and get something more sensible. But with this, I just had to take a deep breath, and start USING it, or I'd never let myself keep it. It was mostly that I never, ever, ever thought I'd have one, and I couldn't justify spending that much on something that takes pictures.
Its been a few months, and I've already taken enough pictures to justify it, in my mind. My children are only young once, and I've always been so miserable when looking at my pictures from my old craptacular camera - I want to have pictures that are as brilliant as my memories. Now, we're getting somewhere.
:)
I also want to take a class and see what else I can get out of this camera - but so far I'm having so much fun without even venturing into the 'creative zone' on the camera. When/if I start to feel limited or like I want it to do things and don't know how, I'll sign up for a class or start reading and doing research.

Hi guys,
Just chiming in. My camera 'died' during a shoot.. I was mortified when I got home and discovered that all of the photos were soft and they all had a dot gain look to them *wail* .. I felt dreadful for the client...
I had been hoping to pick up a 350 or a *dream* 30D at the end of the year.. but drastic measures were needed.. I have shoots booked and no camera.. not to mention my son's third birthday!
I stood in the store for 3 hours (yes i DID! and went back and forth). I wasn't mentally ready to spend a couple of thousand dollars on a camera! but I needed one. I tried both and neither really made me go OH YEAH!
I bought the 30D and came home. I was so concerned that I just spent heaps on something I wasn't *there* with... even tho mentally I knew it was what i needed.
I snapped 50 photos.. and I am in LOVE! money could not be better spent!
as a side note.. it says it has taken 5634 images.. arrghh so it is going back to the store..and I... am waiting 10 days for a new one.. (more wailing - I think this is the defintion of cruel and unusual punishment..LOL - it is sitting there and i cant use it!) but ... 5 days to go and the new one will be here!
