Okay, way beginning photographer here, using a drebel. I am wondering how to avoid sunspots... is it just placement, i.e.- not shooting into the sun, or can they be reduced by using a hood? Thanks!

Add on to that... once I have them (see photo), how do I get rid of 'em???

A hood will help, but you should avoid shooting in to the sun anyway. Besides the flare issue, backlit subjects can be very difficult to expose correctly.
To get rid of them in the photo, you'll need to clone them out. Because it's quite a large flare but on a light area, I would try just cloning the edges using a soft brush at a lower opacity so it blends in and see if that's better.
