Default NSBR: I have a pickle on my porch!

Turns out to be a very rare moth caterpillar! I hope to see it when it full grown! (and get pix!!) This thing is huge, about 5 inches!!!!

ETA: Here is what it is and what it will look like, how stunning!

Anyone ever see one?

Oh how interesting! A few years ago I found one of these pickle-like things. The thing was really odd looking, I'd never seen one before or since...until your post. Now I know what it was.

The thing had those yellow balls on top of it, just like the pic you linked to. But it also had this spiny thing sticking out the top of its head. It kept squirming back and forth and making a squeaking noise. I wish I'd known what it was (or what it was to become) otherwise I would have kept it!

Very cool creature indeed.

Ya know, I actually have a photo of one. They have the most interesting wings. I thought it was labeled incorrectly and that it was a butterfly until i got a close up look at it. It's an ugly litle thing between those gorgeous wings!!! hehe

Butterflies have always grossed me out too for some reason. I LOVE the wings but the "critter" part always kept me from letting them land on me! LOL

I'm a freak.

I actually have a couple of good photos of the moth- they are huge!!! I'm a critter lover, so the caterpillar is just too cool for me - I'll have to show my dd's when I get home!

Here's the one that was on our porch (he was easily 6 - 7 inches across!) We named him Mothra

I've seen the caterpillars plenty of times in my garden. They seem to like tomatoes. I've never seen the moth though.

Wow Daisy, great pics.
