Newbie question: what are upper & lower alphas?

What are upper and lower alphas? How are they used in digital scrapping?

If I understand it well it is that:
They are talking about uppercase and lowercase alpha. UPPERCASE LIKE THIS & lowercase like this.
Sometimes alphas have just uppercase letters, or just lowercase. Or both, the best! Some don't have numbers and pontuaction.
We use alphas mos for writing our titles or whatever like this.

I thought they were some sort of arcane digital graphics file alpha channels for shadows or masking...
