Default Canon G10 - What is it like?

A little while back, I asked here about cameras and under water housings.

I've done my research, and it looks like the Canon G10 is my best long term option. But, I'll have to order it in. The store didn't have one for me to try. I've been assured that the photos it takes are of excellent quality.

If you have one, what's it like? Are you happy with it? How does it feel in you hands? Is it heavy? Would you get another?

Currently, I have a fuji finepix S9500 which I've been very happy with but it's getting a bit old.

Thanks

Early this year I bought a Canon Powershot G9 as well as a Panasonic LumixTZ15 as my alternatives to take away on my 4 month overseas holiday. (my previous small compact was a fuji finepixf30 ) I didn't want the hassle of lugging all the lenses and other equipment for my Canon RebelXti around on holiday yet I still wanted really high quality photo's. The G9 was recommended by other photographers in my club as the best option. The G10 is the later model and seems to be very similar in size, features, increased megapixels and I would think maybe even better performance(which is supposed to happen with later models)

Commenting on the G9 - I am extremely happy with the quality of the photo's and the camera is a mid size and weight - between the small pocket digitals and the DSLR. It is also chunky enough to have good balance in your hand. The only downside is that it doesn't have a very long zoom - so it is limited in the range of applications it is best suited to. Depending on the distance of the work you intend using it for - it is wonderful for close and mid range shots.

Thanks for the comment on the holding feel.

The one thing that is holding me back from just buying the G10 is that it doesn't have an LCD screen that tilts and twists.

The lack of zoom length doesn't really worry me, although it's nice to have.

Four months overseas would have been awesome. I'm going for one month in March and the camera has to suit that too.

Here is a great site for compact cameras. I subscribe to it as a blog.

I've had the G7 and after two years of abuse, it gave out on me so I bought the G10. I thought the G7 was awesome, and nothing could be better, but the picture quality on the G10 is even better. Especially the indoor night shots with flash. I totally love Canon, and the G series is great. It's not too heavy or clunky that it bothers me. I take it everywhere I go, and sometimes I can stuff it in my purse. If you have a costco membership, I suggest you buy from there. It has a 90 day return policy on electronics, so you can try it, and if you hate it, you can return it.

Thanks for the input ladies.

I bought one today but I had to go on a yellow pages epic adventure to find one and I think I bought the last one in South East Queensland. Every camera store within a radius of 100 km is sold out. I found one in a camera store in Brisbane. It was the last one they had.

After fidgeting while waiting for the battery to charge, I've had a play with it and the photo quality is pretty good. The lens cover is a little bit flimsy and I'm going to miss the flip LCD screen (these should be standard on all cameras IMO) but I'm happy with it. I'll be happier when I can see undewater shots.

I had to order the underwater housing and it should be here next week. The stores don't stock them and Amazon won't deliver to my area.

Ooo..how exciting that you got your new 'baby' - I hope you will be really happy with it!!

Have you ever tried
http://www.camerastore.com.au/

I got both my Canon Rebel and my G9 from them and I use them quite a lot for lenses and other supplies too - they are usually fairly competitive in price with most items I have always been extremely impressed with their service I order one day and it's usually delivered within 2 days. (From Sydney to country Victoria) Now that's pretty cool!!

They had the G10 - but you probably got a better price in a store when you could actually haggle for it face to face. iIthink the price on the website was about $650

Thanks for the link.

I'll book mark it for next time. I want to do some research and maybe get the adapter and tele converter for it at some stage. I don't know if I'll need it, but I'll see if the filters I have for my old Canon SLR will fit. I have some nice filters.
