Default NSBR: cool website for kids

Last night I was at a seminar for work and the presenter showed us a website for kids called webkinz.com. It's kindof like SIMS for kids!! It's my understanding that you locate a store near you (we have 2 less then a mile from our house) and you go purchase a stuffed animal, the animal has an adoption code that you register in the computer. You then take care of your pet online!!! You can build rooms and all kinds of stuff!!! The best part is you don't have to worry about child predators as you can only respond using a predetermined script to select from. So my daughter and my nephew can connect on line and visit each other's rooms with their pets! I just think this is so cool!!! The presenter said her whole family... parents, siblings, kids are all addicted to this!!! The kids and I are going to go this afternoon after lunch to pick out their new pets!!!

a bunch of the kids at our church are TOTALLY hooked on this! It's been amazing to hear them talk and trade and shop..and some of the moms are just a leeeeeettle fanatical about buying them LOL But it's cute to see them all get so involved.

You have got to be kidding me... lol!

Arissa LOVES this site and I was just coming here to ask if anyone has had trouble logging on yesterday and today. The site is acting kind of weird on our end since the big "upgrade of the clubhouse".

Any webkinz users moms that have had trouble too?

I think it's a great little site. It totally lets kids have an online experience that is geared to their ages and their abilities and gets them used to things like that. (not that all kids need to be online at that age, but if they are gonna be online it's places like this that are MADE for them!) Seriously, Arissa loves it plays there every day. She says "I don't want to read right now mom" and I say "then no webkinz tonight" and she goes and reads. I love it!

Sounds pretty cool!

What age group is it geared toward? I think it may be a little too old for DS (almost 3 but somewhat computer savvy) but I have a niece who is 5 who might love it...

Arissa (she's 8) LOVES it. Totally fine for her. Rees (my 3 year old) he likes to play with Arissa's online, but she has to log it in, and she plays all the online games and earns the pet money, buys it stuff. Rees just likes to put the bunny in the swimming pool and make it ride the skateboard and things. But if he had his own pet he wouldn't really get how to earn it money and buy it things, so for now we just let him play with Arissa's.

I think the 5 year old would do fine with most parts of it.

Oh, they do have this new "open chat" area where you have to get parents permission to go to (they just started it yesterday). But I think they have set up some good guidelines to protect the kids in that area as well. (In here you can type what you want to your friends, but the words you type have to be in their dictionary - so anything inappropriate is not allowed, also no numbers, etc.)

I was wondering what ages are best too.

well- that looks really cool. The website looks like it ranges from 5-13+ but I think that my 5yo would have a hard time without my constant help. My 9 yo would have a blast I think. Maybe I'll run and get her one. I called a store that carries them and the small are only $7.99 and the large are $9.99 (I think it varies per store). I find that pretty reasonable and that gets you a year of site activity. If she looses interest, then I don't have much money out on the stuffed animal anyways.

I wouldn't worry about that... lol! It's addicting (just like DST... lol!) She will love it and be hooked on it, and you'll have to monitor her time on it and use it as a reward or something... lol!

The worst part about this is now my daughter is always buggin me to use the computer - we have to share... lol!

My cousins showed me these over Christmas. All 4 of the kids have them and love them. I think I might get these for my Pastor's boys for their birthdays. Heck, I want one! LOL
