Post Digital SLR & Metal Detectors

I'll be leaving the country next Tuesday and I was wondering

#1)Will anything happen to my Memory/Picture cards If I leave em in my camera?
#2)Should I carry on or pack my camera?

Any other suggestions, advice greatly appreciated, I'm lame I know but I'm not sure it these things are ok, or how I should travel? :?

I always carried my camera with me. Have you seen the way the airports handle lugage? I would just be horrified to open up my bag and see my camera in peices or not work. We were in Iceland for 2 1/2 years, so we always carried any of our electronics on board. And the xrays won't do anything to the cards, in fact I don't think the harm film anymore either.

I think the machines still damage high ASA film, but you're right - digital is not affected. I travel a lot and have never had a problem with any digital camera. But ALWAYS carry it on. I'd rather check my husband before my camera, LOL.

Will do, Then I'll carry it on, I was thinking of havin' the camera go Incognito cuz I'm not sure of the area were going to and dh says in the city I shouldn't have it out but otherwise it's ok! I'm also taking my compact one, I want my dslr for the beach, mountains etc, etc.

I just got back from vacation and i always had my camera with me. I took about 900MBs worth of pictures lol and they all came back fine.

One thing I'm really glad I did was get a top-loading camera bag to carry it in. I started out w/this small type of bag b/c I thought it would be helpful for trips to the park etc. Lots of room for my dSLR w/lens and I felt it was more protected than just carrying the camera around my neck. It is also more comfortable to carry around in these bags. It also has a small zippered section in the front where I could keep my wallet (may not be comfortable in a high-tourist area or if afraid of pick pockets), theme park maps, cup of cheerios...a lot more than expected lol.

If I didn't get this bag - the other thing I would consider is one of those neoprene (is that what's it's called?) neck straps for carrying comfort.

I just got back from Colorado, and my 20D went through the Xray machine both times with the memory card in it. It's fine.

Xray machines won't hurt your digital cameras or memory disks, but I would never pack my camera. Like others have said, they manhandle your bags and could care less about the contents inside, and the way everyone goes through your bags any more for airport security, to me it is just to much temptation.

My problem is now that the airlines are changing policies so you can only have one carry on plus purse, I'm having a difficult time figuring out how to get my laptop on planes too. I need a suitcase for all my techie gear anymore, LOL. Maybe I should quit carrying a purse!

Generally I take the laptop out of the case and put it in the carryon between my clothes. I have also put camera, camera gear, laptop, medicines in carryon and checked my clothes as you suggested.
