Tell us about your family:
My family consist of me, my brilliant husband (the programmer who writes the Preset Viewer software products,) and our two spectacular children Nick, 10 & Alli, 8. We live at the foot of Pikes Peak in Colorado with our 2 dogs and 4 cats. My mother also lives with us.
How long have you been designing?
I’ve worked as a graphic designer in some capacity or another since 1998. I have designed books, billboards, business cards and more logos that you can shake a stick at. I have been designing scrapbooking supplies since 2006, although I have been on hiatus for the last year or so. In addition to designing, I teach graphic design at the local community college.
What program(s) do you use?
All of them. Photoshop, Illustrator always. Corel Painter and Art Rage on occasion.
If you’re running low on design mojo, where do you go to kickstart your creativity?
I go hiking. Or to the movies. There is nothing more frustrating that sitting in front of a computer uninspired. So I go do something else. Sometimes I paint, or sketch. Sometimes I look at the work of a graphic designer or artist that I really like and try to reimagine their work. I also find album cover art very inspiring so I check out new artist on Spotify.com.
What is your most recent finished project?
The biggest project I finished recently is my new site & store: Just-Betsy.com. I designed for TwoPeasInABucket.com for nearly 4 years before they closed down their digital product lines. After having been there for so long, I felt I needed a break. I could have put my work in my husband’s software store but it didn’t seem to be the right fit. So in January of this year, before the semester started, I spent a good chunk of time putting together Just-Betsy.com.
What is the latest you’ve ever stayed up to finish a design or scrap?
I’m a true night owl, so it is not uncommon for me to finish up at 2:30 or 3 in morning.
What’s your favorite snack to have handy while you design?
Herbal tea. I think I am the only person in the world who uses a Keurig just for hot water.
What book are you reading right now?
Typically, I have more than one book in progress. Currently, I am reading The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor & Van Gogh: The Life by Steven Naifeh & Gregory White Smith
Slippers or barefoot?
Barefoot. As often as possible.
Favorite tv show?
Warehouse 13 (which has been cancelled – darn it!) Castle & the Good Wife.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Fine art. Art museums. And TED videos.
Name five of your favorite CDs.
I gave up on CDs several years ago in exchange for MP3s, but even those have gone by the wayside recently. My current obsession, thanks to one of my students, is Spotify.com. My musical tastes change like the weather, so Spotify is a great fit for me. Currently I am listening to The Kin, P!nk, 80s One Hit Wonders, Lee DeWyze and Ed Sheeran.
What is your favorite quote?
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. ~ Marianne Williamson
If you could have one super power, what would it be?
That’s easy! The ability to pause time. I have a long list of things I want to do and an equally long list of things to get caught up on.
If you could change one thing about this world, what would it be?
People would see the cup half full instead of half empty. I tend to be a bit of a Pollyanna, but it really has made my life much easier. I wish more people would adopt a positive outlook. There is some really amazing research that indicates that the key to success is being happy, not the other way around.
What are your 3 favorite internet sites (scrap or non-scrap related)?
Lynda.com; Ted.com; and Amazon.com
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you make your home?
I would live near the ocean… St. John, USVI comes to mind. Or in Northern California. Or NYC. Or Florence, Italy. Or I would just travel… a lot.
What was it about you that first drew your significant other to you?
He knew the words to songs by C.W. McCall.
At the end of the day, how do you want to be remembered?
I want to be remembered for being kind, passionate about art, inspiring to my students and supportive of my family and friends. I want to be remembered for lifting people up, not tearing them down.
