Twice a month we select a designer, showcase layouts from one of their kits, and introduce you to their style. In addition, the designer provides a free add-on kit just for you, our readers!  You never know, you might discover a new favorite or two!

This month, let’s meet Miki of Microferk Designs/Studio Miki.

DST: Tell us about yourself and your family.
Miki: My name is Miki Ferkul and I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart, John, for 27 years now. We have three kids: Chris who’s nearly 23, Alexandra who’s fourteen and Zach who’s eleven.

DST:How did you begin digital scrapbooking?
Miki: I began scrapping way back in the 1990′s when we got our first ink jet printer (before that it was dot-matrix, black ink only!). The printer came with a program called Sierra Print Artist. I played around in that, eventually learning Power Point and doing some simple things there, and then Publisher. In the early 2000′s I joined a site called iVillage and  siggies became the rage. By that time I had Paint Shop Pro, made by Jasc at the time. A group of us who loved making signature tags asked for a digital-scrapboooking board and got one. We shared tips and tricks and started making kits based on a common palette or theme, then sharing those with each other. I’ll always credit fellow designer Christine Nash as being key in encouraging me to learn how to design and then beginning to sell in a store. So, in 2005 I joined Scrap Outside the Box and then Scrapbook-Elements in 2006. I was there until I joined ScrapbookGraphics in 2011. I have [been] blessed to work in wonderful stores with incredible owners and fabulous designers. It still delights me to get up each morning, knowing I get to do what I want, and it’s something I love doing.

DST: What inspires you to design?
Miki: So many things are inspirational– it can be a color palette you see being used somewhere or textures. Going to places like Playhouse Square and being in an old theater or going to the museum all seem to trigger the creative flow. Of course, holidays are always exciting and offer so much inspiration!
DST: What other hobbies do you enjoy?
Miki: In my down time, I love reading–I am an avid reader as a matter of fact, and I love listening to music. Though heavy metal is my own personal guilty pleasure, I do like a lot of other musical genres: jazz, blues, reggae, house, dub step, classic rock, Celtic and hip hop. I also like to unwind on the weekend catching up on some good movies or
series with my sweetie: following True Blood, Vampire Diaries–any thing starring Johnny Depp!
