New To You: Lovely Day by Karen’s Scraps and Graphics

This month, let’s meet Karen of Karen’s Scraps and Graphics.

DST: Tell us about yourself and your family.
Karen: I’m 48 and have been married to my hubby for 29 years. We live in Gippsland, Australia, and we have two adult children, three beautiful grandchildren, a dog (who thinks he’s human) and a galah (who thinks he’s a dog and is trying to work out the doggie door) .

DST:How did you begin digital scrapbooking?

Karen: My 22-year-old son has autism and I am his full-time carer so am home all the time as he doesn’t like leaving the house much. I’m not the sort of person who can just sit around and do nothing, so was thrilled when a friend introduced me to Paint Shop. I started out making Autism Awareness tags which I share on my Autism Awareness website. I was getting more and more interested in digital graphics so ended up doing some online courses and going over to Photoshop. I opened my own small digital scrapbooking/graphic store in 2010. I mainly make commercial-use products but also do the occasional kits. At the end of each year, I donate part of my earnings to an Autism foundation.

DST: What inspires you to design?

Karen: Sometimes, ideas just spring from nowhere. I tend to get bored easily so I dabble in a lot of different types of graphics, anything from a digital kit to 3D graphics. I do often get customer requests so sometimes it’s the customer who inspires the design. I can’t say I stick to current trends. I just make what I like. Hopefully someone out there w[ill] like it too.

DST: What other hobbies do you enjoy?

Karen: I have taken up crocheting doll’s clothes. It started when I made my granddaughter some clothes for her doll. Once I started I couldn’t stop. It’s very addictive. I will eventually be selling those online in my store. I also like to read. I mainly read fantasy type books. Though lately, more hours go into my digital graphics so time for reading is getting rare!
